Those minerals are not unwanted debris. Dogs and cats need calcium and phosphorus for bones and teeth, potassium and magnesium for normal cell and muscle function, and smaller amounts of iron, zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and other trace elements. The job of a complete food is to provide the right amounts and relationships.
Why it appears on the label
UK and EU rules require dog and cat foods to declare crude protein, crude oils and fats, crude fibre and crude ash under “analytical constituents.” Moisture must also be declared when it exceeds the legal threshold. The ash figure may instead appear as “incinerated residue” or “inorganic matter.” All three terms mean the same measurement.
This panel is an analysis of the finished food. It is different from the ingredients list, which tells you what went into the recipe, and from the additives list, which identifies vitamins, trace elements, preservatives and other authorised additives that must be declared under specific rules.
Crude ash is also used in nutrition calculations. When moisture, protein, fat, fibre and ash are known, carbohydrate can be estimated by difference. That estimate is useful, but it inherits the limits of every number on the panel and should not be presented as a directly measured carbohydrate result.
Is there a good crude ash percentage?
There is no universal cut-off that turns total ash into a quality grade. A higher figure can reflect more bone-rich animal material, added calcium and phosphorus, or a recipe designed for a particular nutritional purpose. A lower figure does not prove better ingredients or a better mineral balance.
The total also hides composition. Two foods can both declare 8 percent crude ash while carrying different amounts of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and sodium. One number cannot show whether those minerals meet the needs of a kitten, a large-breed puppy or an adult dog.
For a healthy pet, start with whether the food is complete for the correct species and life stage. That claim ties the whole formulation to a published nutrient profile. For a pet with kidney disease, urinary stones or another condition that changes mineral needs, the relevant individual minerals and the whole therapeutic diet matter. Total ash is not a safe substitute for veterinary guidance.
How to compare wet and dry food
The number on the pack is given “as fed,” which means water is included. That makes a wet food look lower in almost every analytical constituent because most of the tray is moisture. To compare formats, remove the water mathematically and put both foods on a dry matter basis.
Take a dry food with 8 percent ash and 10 percent moisture. Its dry matter is 90 percent, so the calculation is 8 divided by 90, multiplied by 100: about 8.9 percent ash on a dry matter basis.
Now take a wet food with 2 percent ash and 80 percent moisture. Its dry matter is 20 percent, so 2 divided by 20, multiplied by 100 gives 10 percent. The wet food had the smaller printed number but the larger dry matter figure.

What the number cannot tell you
Crude ash does not identify the minerals inside the total. It cannot reveal the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, sodium, magnesium or phosphorus concentration unless the manufacturer declares those separately. It also says nothing about mineral digestibility or how consistently the food is made.
It cannot diagnose a urinary or kidney problem. A common online shortcut says that ash causes crystals, but stone risk depends on the mineral involved, urine concentration, urine pH, water intake, the type of stone and the individual animal. Calcium oxalate and struvite stones do not even call for the same nutritional strategy.
Finally, ash is not a contamination test. Safety controls for heavy metals and unwanted substances are separate from this broad analytical total. A normal-looking ash percentage cannot prove that every specific mineral or contaminant is within its legal limit.

- Match the species and life stage, especially for kittens and growing puppies.
